Designing an Enhanced Onboarding Experience

From amorphous to structured

Challenge

The relatively new and rapidly growing department lacked an onboarding structure and robust new hire training plan, resulting in low performance levels and low staff retention, a trend especially exacerbated within the novel context of the remote work environment.

Solution

  • Prompt adaptation to remote training by using Loom to record videos of processes

  • Build a solid remote program by creating a daily training schedule for managers to employ with new hires

  • Add training videos to the schedule and link necessary documentation

  • Assign a senior trainer, a manger and a buddy for each new hire

  • Include a priority-based checklist and create scavenger games to learn more about our internal systems

Outcome

In 18 months, during COVID, the team doubled from 6 to 12 with only one team member leaving. With retention stabilized, a new hierarchical structure formed, making it possible to craft new goals and growth opportunities and meet business needs, while cultivating a positive work-life balance.
